Ashwatthama is the name of the great warrior and the grandson of Bhishma Pitamaha in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. He is the son of Dhrishtadyumna and Draupadi. Ashwatthama is known for his bravery and is a central character in the Mahabharata war. He is also called Dhananjaya because he won the kingdom of Dhananjaya from King Duryodhana during the war.

Ashwatthama is also known for performing the Ashwatthama Sthalabheda or the Curse of the Ashwatthama Lake, an event that took place after the Mahabharata war. The curse was placed upon Ashwatthama by Bhishma Pitamaha, who was dying and was unable to attend the funeral pyre of Bhishma. Bhishma wanted to make sure Ashwatthama would not attend his own funeral, so he cursed Ashwatthama and all those who attended the funeral to be destroyed. Ashwatthama, along with Krishna and Dhrishtadyumna, went to the Ashwatthama Lake to perform the last rites of Bhishma. When they arrived, they were attacked by Bhishma's soldiers who were under the curse. Ashwatthama killed them all, and this led to the curse being fulfilled.
