Ashwathama is believed to be the son of Dhaumya, a sage, and Urvashi, a celestial nymph. He is a central figure in the Mahabharata, an ancient Indian epic. In the epic, Ashwathama is a great warrior and is a cousin and trusted friend of Bhishma Pitamaha, the grandsire of the Kuru kingdom. However, in the great Kurukshetra war, Ashwathama is filled with jealousy and anger towards the Pandava brothers. After the war, he performs a ritual to obtain immortality, but a curse results in his immortality being incomplete, leading to his eternal suffering.

Ashwathama is also mentioned in the Puranas, a collection of Sanskrit texts. In one story, Ashwathama is the commander of the armies of King Yudhishthira during the war against the Asura king, Vrishadhvaja. Ashwathama's army is defeated and he is forced to flee. In his desperation, he performs a ritual to obtain the invincibility boon, but in doing so, he inadvertently disturbs the peace of the gods, leading to the great cosmic war known as the Devasura Samudra.
