Sabbaaqa

The name Sabbaaqa has historical significance for Islam as it is the name of a major event in Islamic history - The Great Deluge or The Flood. According to Islamic traditions, when Prophet Nooh (AS) warned his people about the impending punishment of Allah (SWT) for their disobedience, he urged them to seek refuge on his ship or ark (built as a command from Allah), along with his family, seven pairs of every kind of pure clean animal, and his devout followers. When the rain started, Allah sent Sabaaiq (winds/torrents of water) which destroyed all forms of life on Earth, except those on the ark. The term Sabaaqa represents these powerful and devastating waves of water.

In contemporary Islamic spiritual contexts, the term Sabaaqa is metaphorically used to represent Allah's (SWT) immense Power and Sovereignty. It symbolizes Allah's capacity to bring about existential upheaval in our lives, uproot our supposedly permanent foundations, and test our faith in Him. It reminds us that Allah holds the reins of our lives in His hands and has the ultimate power to change our circumstances as He wills. It is an essential aspect of Islamic spirituality to submit to this Power, recognizing one's smallness and need for Allah.
