Cultural & Spiritual notes
Rumi, also known as Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi or Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, (1207-1273 CE) was a 13th-century Persian poet, philosopher, and Sufi theologian. His poetry transcended cultural and linguistic barriers, influencing the works of poets, such as Hafez and Shakespeare. A legend once said that upon hearing Rumi’s poetry, St. Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in England, wept upon hearing a translation of his works from Latin.
The name Rumi derives from the Arabic word 'rumi', which means 'a Roman' or a 'dweller in Rome'. However, the term came to be used as a term for Sufis, and has been associated with Mawlana Jalal al-Din Rumi, the famous Persian poet, and for his spiritual teachings.
