Meaning & Origin
Haussam is a name derived from the Arabic word ‘hassasah’ which means ‘to guard’ or ‘to maintain’. It is a name that signifies protection, security, and safety. The name is mentioned in the Quran in reference to the Prophet Yunus (Jonah) who was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a whale. Allah (swt) commanded the fish to ‘cast him upon the land with an open mouth’ (Quran 37:145). When Yunus was cast upon the land, Haussam bin Madhkur (a companion of the Prophet Yunus) was there to welcome him back to his people. The name is also mentioned in a Hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah where the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, ‘There was a man from the Ansar who was named Haussam. He had a slave boy who used to serve him. When the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) came to Medina, this man came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have a slave boy whom I want to free. What should I do?’ The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, ‘Name him after me and then free him.’ So the man named the slave after the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and freed him.’ (Bukhari)
