Historical references
The Chams were an early Islamic dynasty that ruled over a large part of present-day Vietnam from the 7th to the 10th centuries. They established the Cham civilization, which was a blend of Indian and Islamic influences. The Chams adopted Islam as their state religion and built numerous mosques and Islamic shrines throughout their kingdom.
7th to 10th centuries
The Chams are believed to have originated from the Indian subcontinent, specifically the Gujarat region, and settled in what is now central Vietnam around the 2nd century AD. They established a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom known as Van Xa, which flourished until it was conquered by the Vietnamese in the late 15th century. Later, the Chams adopted Islam and established the Islamic Cham Empire, which reached its peak in the 10th and 11th centuries and controlled a significant part of present-day Vietnam and Cambodia.
