Ibn Khaldun describes Asu as an Arab tribe that inhabited the region of Bahrain and the surrounding areas in the 14th century. They were known for their seafaring and trading skills, and were significant in the maritime trade between the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. Ibn Khaldun also mentions that the Asu were subjugated by the Rasulids of Yemen, who ruled over the region at that time.

Al-Masudi, an early Arab geographer and historian, mentions the Asu as an Arab tribe inhabiting the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in the 10th century. He describes them as fishermen and pearl divers, and notes that they were involved in maritime trade with India and beyond. Al-Masudi also mentions that the Asu were subject to the authority of the Abbasid Caliphs in Baghdad, who maintained a degree of control over the region through local governors and military garrisons.
