Historical Usage
Al-Bukhari records the story of Arfaa in his authentic collection of Hadith, Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 55, Number 525. The story describes Arfaa as a young Ethiopian boy who was a slave in the household of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (Caliph Umar). Arfaa was known for his exceptional piety and devotion to prayer. When Umar heard of Arfaa's sincere devotion, he set him free and encouraged him to continue his pious practices.
634 AD - 644 AD (Caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab)
Ibn Kathir records in his book Al-Bidaya wa-l-Nihaya that Arfaa was an Ethiopian slave who lived during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Arfaa was known to perform 1000 rakats (units) of prayer each day and night. When the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) heard of Arfaa's devotion, he asked his companions to visit Arfaa and offer him their greetings. The companions visited Arfaa and found him to be in a weakened state due to his excessive prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Arfaa to reduce his prayer to a more reasonable amount, as it was causing him harm.
622 AD - 632 AD (Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) lifetime)
