Meaning & Origin

One who is remembered or recalled. In Islamic context, Khatir can refer to a person who is remembered by Allah and His Prophet. There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari (5263) that states, 'When Allah's Messenger (pbuh) went out to the battle of Tabuk, he said, 'Whoever desires to accompany me on this expedition, let him come up; and whoever dislikes it, or is unable to join me, let him stay behind with the excuse (which Allah will accept from him).' The man who was to bring the food said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Will it be incumbent upon us to go out with you?' He replied, 'Yes.' The man said, 'Will it be incumbent upon us to go out even if we are elderly?' He replied, 'Yes.' The man said, 'Will it be incumbent upon us to go out even if we have to crawl?' He replied, 'Yes.' The man said, 'O Allah's Messenger! We will not leave you till you go.' Then Allah's Messenger (pbuh) went out till he reached Tabuk, and those who had been left behind came to Medina, and when they were about to enter Medina, they were met by some Ansari men who had been on the expedition with Allah's Messenger (pbuh) and had returned. They asked them about Allah's Messenger and his state. They said, 'The Prophet of Allah has gone away and left us.' So these people went back to their families and remained behind, but Allah's Messenger returned and they were the 'Khatir,' i.e., the ones who were remembered.

Cultural & Spiritual notes

In Islamic culture, Khatir refers to a person who is remembered or recalled. This can apply to any situation where a person is remembered or mentioned, but it often carries a positive connotation, suggesting that the person is valued or held in high regard.

In Islamic spirituality, Khatir can refer to a person who is remembered by Allah and His Prophet. This is a great honor, as it suggests that the person's actions, good deeds, and intentions have been recognized and remembered by God. There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari that speaks of the Khatir, those who remained behind when the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) went out to the battle of Tabuk, despite their regret for not being able to join him in the expedition. The Prophet's return to Medina after the expedition was delayed by various circumstances, and those who stayed behind were referred to as the Khatir. This demonstrates the importance of faith, perseverance, and the desire to join in the service of God, even when faced with challenges or obstacles. The Hadith also highlights the significance of companionship, as those who stayed behind remained steadfast in their faith and continued to support the Prophet and his mission, even from a distance. Ultimately, being remembered by Allah is a reminder of the importance of seeking His pleasure, which is the ultimate goal for every believer.
