The name Vishwamitra means 'all-knowing' or 'omniscient'. He was a celebrated sage who performed rigorous Tapasya (penance) to obtain the divine boon of bringing the Devas and Asuras together.

Another reference to the name Vishwamaya is found in the Mahabharata where it is mentioned that the great warrior Bhishma, during his final moments before his death, attained the knowledge of the entire universe (Vishwam) by the grace of the sage Vishwamitra, who was called Vishwamaya or the 'all-wise'.
