Bhima was born through the Boar Avatar of Lord Vishnu. Tamalika offered herself to the deity in order to protect her husband, Vidura, who was mistakenly cursed by Bhishma. The curse would have caused Vidura to lose his manhood, but Tamalika's sacrifice saved him.

According to this text, Tamalika was a sage's wife, who, along with her husband, performed a penance to please Lord Shiva. The deity appeared to them and granted them a boon. Tamalika asked for a son who would be a great warrior and would destroy the demons Madhu and Kaitabha. Lord Shiva granted her request and their son was born as the divine warrior Narasimha.
