Subhashini was the name of a prominent freedom fighter and social worker during the Indian independence movement. She was born in 1888 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu and was educated in Madras. She later moved to Bombay and became involved in the Indian National Congress and the Indian Home Rule League. She was arrested several times for her activism and spent time in prison. In 1925, she was appointed as the Deputy Principal of the Maharani's College in Bombay. She continued her activism and was arrested again in 1932 and was sent to the Ajanta House, a detention camp in Poona. She passed away in 1943.

She lived during the Sangam period (approximately 2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE) and is considered one of the Alwars or saints in the Hindu tradition. She is known for her poetic works, particularly her collection of 120 hymns in the Tirumurai, a sacred text in the Shaivite tradition of Hinduism. Her poems express her devotion to Lord Shiva and her longing for union with him.
