In Hindu culture, the term "rebel" does not have a direct equivalent and is typically expressed as 'maavad' (pertaining to a king who defies ruled advice or refuses to conform to societal norms) or 'shastra-vaad' (referring to one who defies scriptures). Historically, rebellion has been either a force to challenge and overthrow oppressive rulers or to establish new religions, often driven by the spirit of self-determination and "sloka mahima" (the glory of the scripture). From a spiritual perspective, rebelling can have deep significance. In Hindu philosophy, the ultimate goal is Moksha or the liberation of the soul from the cycle of birth and death. Renouncing material possessions or societal conventions in pursuit of a higher purpose or personal enlightenment can be seen as a form of rebellion towards the material world and societal expectations.
