The Mahabharata mentions Pururava as the husband of Chitraangada, the queen of Manipur. The story goes that Pururava was cursed by a sage and turned into a cow. Chitraangada, not recognizing her husband, killed him. Later, she was filled with remorse and asked the sage for forgiveness and to lift the curse. The sage agreed, but only if she could find Pururava and ask for his forgiveness.

Another reference to Pururava can be found in the Puranas. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Pururava was the son of the sage Ikshvaku. He was a great warrior and was married to Prabha, a celestial nymph. Together they had a son named Bhishma. The story goes that Pururava once performed a great sacrifice to please the gods. Indra, the king of the gods, was angered by the brightness of the sacrificial fire and tried to extinguish it. Pururava, in the guise of a deer, was able to distract Indra and save the sacrifice.
