Historical references

Legend has it that Lord Shiva once visited the temple at Tarapitha (West Bengal, India) in disguise, accompanied by Niladri, his bearer. Niladri carried a pitcher filled with the divine nectar (Amrita) that Shiva had received from the gods. On the way to the temple, they were stopped by the demon Tripura Sundari, who demanded a share of the Amrita. Shiva refused, and in anger, Tripura Sundari attacked them. Shiva, in his anger, opened his third eye, and the flames from it burnt the demon to ashes. The place where this happened is known as Niladri Kantha, and the temple there is famous for granting the blessings of both Shiva and Tripura Sundari.
