According to Hindu mythology, Madhumita was a beautiful Apsara (celestial nymph) who was in love with the sage Markandeya. She was so enchanted by his devotion to Lord Shiva that she decided to test his resolve. She appeared before him in the form of a beautiful woman and tried to seduce him. Markandeya, however, remained steadfast in his devotion and rejected her advances. Madhumita, in anger, cursed Markandeya to die at the age of 100. However, Lord Shiva intervened and saved Markandeya, thus Madhumita's curse was in vain.
