Historical references

Madhavrao was the ruling Maratha monarch of the Maratha Confederacy from 1760 to 1772. He came to power after the death of his father, Shahu Raje Bhonsle, who was a strong centraliser and had tried to merge the feudal Maratha territories into a single state under his rule. Madhavrao, however, was weak and indecisive and was easily manipulated by powerful feudal lords, leading to the dissolution of the Maratha Confederacy and the Peshwas gaining de facto power.

1760-1772

Madhavrao was the son of Shahu, the Maratha king of Satara. During his reign, the Maratha Empire suffered significant losses to the British East India Company. In 1773, the British took control of the strategically important port of Surat. Madhavrao's inability to prevent this loss further weakened his position and led to the increasing dominance of the Peshwas in Maratha internal affairs.
