Kamendra was a powerful Vishwamitra, a sage and a great Rishi in Hindu mythology. He is also known for his association with King Harishchandra. Once, when King Harishchandra was in dire need of a son, Kamendra granted him a boon that his wife would give birth to a son. However, the condition was that the child would be given away as a sacrifice to the gods. True to his word, Harishchandra fulfilled his obligation, and the child, named Rohitasena, was duly sacrificed. Kamendra, in his mercy, brought back Rohitasena to life, and bestowed him with celestial powers.

Kamendra was a Rashtrakuta king, who ruled over the Deccan region in present-day India between 896-910 AD. During his reign, he expanded his territories significantly, and is known to have built several temples and inscriptions that bear testimony to his rule. One of his most significant achievements was the construction of the Kailasa Temple in Ellora, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to his architectural prowess.
