Cultural & Spiritual notes
The name Kalpakshi is derived from the Sanskrit words "Kalpa" meaning cosmos or universe and "Ashi" meaning seat or vehicle. In Hindu mythology, Kalpakshi is a bird that is said to embody the creator god Brahma's vehicle. This bird is believed to carry the seeds of creation in its beak and is often depicted as a Swan. The name Kalpakshi is also associated with the Hindu festival of Diwali, which is celebrated as the victory of light over darkness. On this day, people light diyas or clay lamps to signify the arrival of Kalpak, the divine bird, which is believed to bring prosperity and happiness to homes.
Kalpakshi holds deep spiritual significance in Hinduism as it is believed to represent the power of imagination and creativity that is essential for creation and innovation. The bird is an embodiment of the divine power that brings new life and energy to the universe. Kalpakshi is also believed to symbolize the eternal cycle of creation, destruction, and rebirth. It reminds us that just as the bird flies from one life to another, we too must continually evolve and transform ourselves to keep pace with the ever-changing world around us.

Historical references
Kalpakshi Mahatmya in the Skanda Purana describes a sacred tank named Kalpakshi, located at the confluence of the rivers Bhavani and Chitravathi in Tirumullai, Tamil Nadu. It is believed that taking a dip in this tank on the day of Kritika Star (the 15th day of the Tamil month of Aadi) will grant the devotee moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).
Medieval Period
Another reference to Kalpakshi can be found in the 16th-century Tamil literature 'Ak Republic', where it is mentioned as the place where the Pandyan King Maravarman Sundara Pandyan (r. 1325-1335 AD) performed the 'Kalpakshi Mahotsavam' or the Kalpakshi Festival. During this festival, the king would perform a grand procession on a boat in the tank, accompanied by elephants, horses, and thousands of his subjects.
