Ekavir is also known as 'Ekadash Ruddra' and is considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is believed to have appeared to destroy the demon king, Jalandhar, who had taken the form of a Yogini and was deceiving his wife Prakriti. Prakriti had been unaware of Jalandhar's true form, as Lord Shiva had granted him a boon that he could not be killed by a man or a woman. Ekavir, however, was neither a man nor a woman and was therefore able to destroy Jalandhar. This event occurred during the Mahabharata period, around the 4th century BCE.

Ekavir is also mentioned in the Puranic texts as a form of Lord Shiva, who is worshipped to protect against diseases, especially smallpox. This event is believed to have occurred around the 7th century CE.
