Historical references
Legend has it that Drupada was the king of the Panchalas, a powerful kingdom located in the region of modern-day Gujarat and Maharashtra. He is most famously known for his role in the Mahabharata, where he is the father of the two Pandava brothers, Yudhishthira and Bhima. The Pandavas are exiled from their kingdom and must live in disguise for 12 years before they can reclaim their throne. During this time, Drupada agrees to help them win back their kingdom by providing them with the weapon that will ultimately secure their victory: the invincible bow called the Gandiva, which belonged to the god Shiva.
circa 400 BCE
Another reference to Drupada comes from the Puranas, a collection of Hindu religious texts. In this context, Drupada is described as the son of King Angiras and his wife Prasuti. He is said to have performed a great sacrifice (yajna) to invoke the gods, and as a reward, Indra, the god of rain and thunder, appeared before him. Indra was pleased by Drupada's devotion and granted him a boon. Drupada asked for a son who would be as powerful as Indra himself. This son was born as Bhagadatta, who would later become a formidable warrior and a key figure in the battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata.
