According to the Mahabharata, Drupada was the king of Panchala and the father of Draupadi. He was a great warrior and is best known for his role in the Kurukshetra War. He had been cursed by a sage, which caused him to be unable to produce a son. He prayed to Lord Shiva to grant him a son, and was later blessed with five sons - Draupada, Dhrishtadyumna, Sahadeva, Vima and Shikhandi.

In another version, Drupada was the king of Hastinapura who ruled during the time of the Pandavas. He is known for his role in the exile of the Pandavas. During their exile, the Pandavas lived disguised as brahmins in the kingdom of King Drupada. Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandava brothers, won the kingdom of Virata by defeating the king in a game of dice. After their exile was over, the Pandavas returned to Hastinapura, where they were welcomed back by King Drupada.
