Legend has it that King Bharata, the father of Lord Rama, had a charioteer named Dhruva. Dhruva was an ungrateful and disrespectful boy who doubted his father's superiority and even challenged him to a chariot race. In anger, King Bharata expelled Dhruva from the kingdom. Dhruva, repentant and seeking forgiveness, went to the sage Trisanku for guidance. Trisanku, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, advised Dhruva to meditate on Vishnu and offered him a place in the heavens as a reward for his devotion.
Pre-mahabharata Era (circa 1000 BC - 300 AD)
Dhruv was also a celebrated astronomer and mathematician. He is credited with being the first to calculate the position of the North Star, which is called Polaris or Dhruva Tara in Indian astronomy. According to the Mahabharata, Dhruva was the son of King Uttanapada and Renuka. When Dhruva was a young prince, he doubted his father's supremacy and was cursed by the sage Vashisttha to be born as a star in the constellation of Ursa Minor. After many hardships and penance, he was released from his curse and attained a place in the heavens as the North Star.
