Devabrata, also known as Bhagiratha, performed the Tripada Yajna (a sacred fire ritual) to bring the Gods of the Himalayas to the Gangasagar Island, so that the ashes of his ancestor King Sagara could be immersed in the holy waters of the Ganga, thereby freeing them from the curse of the sage Kapila.

Devabrata was also a king in ancient India, who ruled over the kingdom of Anga in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent. He was a contemporary of the Buddha, and is mentioned in various Buddhist scriptures as a powerful king who was an ardent follower of Buddhism and built many viharas (monasteries) to accommodate the monks and nuns. According to one legend, Devabrata was visited by the Buddha himself during one of his travels and was deeply moved by the Buddha's teachings, and henceforth became a devoted disciple and an important supporter of Buddhism.
