During the exile of the Pandava brothers, they disguised themselves as servants in Virata's kingdom. Deepani mistook Bhima in disguise for the mighty Bhima and offered him her own bed. Bhima, however, declined her offer and slept on a bed of kusha grass. Impressed by his humility, Deepani was won over by Bhima and they became friends.
