Bipul Chandra Pal was an Indian nationalist, born on 19 August 1857 in the village of Sivrampur, in the district of Malda, in the British Indian province of Bengal Presidency. He was a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and a co-founder of the Indian National Social Conference. Pal advocated violent means for attaining Swaraj (self-rule) for India. Pal was one of the first Indian nationalists to be arrested for his participation in the Indian Independence movement under the British Raj.
