The Mahabharata mentions a woman named Ampika, daughter of the king of Madra named Sisupala. She was married to Bhishma, the grandsire of the Pandavas. Once, during a hunting expedition, Bhishma saw Ampika bathing in a lake. Unable to control his lust, he approached her, but she rebuffed him. Infuriated, Bhishma cursed her to be a leper for life.
