Like the refreshing breeze, God brings new beauty, renewal, and revitalization to our souls.
Historical references
In Greek mythology, Zephyrus was the god of the west wind. Zephira was believed to be his daughter or wife. According to one myth, Zephyrus fell in love with the beautiful nymph Chloris, who was wandering in the countryside, sad because she had never experienced the joys of spring. Zephyrus abducted Chloris and carried her off to a secluded place where he wooed and married her. After the wedding, Zephyrus released her from his embrace, and she was transformed into the goddess of spring, Flora. From that day on, Zephira was identified with the west wind that heralded the arrival of spring.
Classical antiquity, 8th century BC - 4th century AD
In Christian tradition, Saint Zephira is a virgin martyr venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. She is said to have lived in the city of Antioch during the Roman Empire and was martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Decius (249-251 AD). According to tradition, Zephira was a wealthy and beautiful woman who converted many to Christianity. When Decius issued an edict commanding all citizens to offer sacrifices to the Roman gods, Zephira refused and was imprisoned. She was subjected to various tortures but remained steadfast in her faith. Eventually, she was burned alive in a oven. Her relics were discovered in Constantinople in the 4th century and are now venerated in the Monastery of the Mother of God Peribleptos in Istanbul.
