Historical references

Wolfgarda, or Wolfgarde, is believed to be the name of a medieval German female saint. She was the daughter of Count Albrecht II of Brandenburg, born around 1156. Legend has it that she was a devout and charitable woman who was known for her beautiful singing voice. One story tells of her singing to a bear which had been terrorizing her village. The bear was so moved by her voice that it left the village and never returned.

12th century

Another version of the story of Wolfgarda comes from the town of Jutta in Silesia, Poland. According to this account, Wolfgarda was a beautiful maiden who lived in the 13th century. She was renowned for her piety and was the object of desire for many young men. To escape their advances, she retreated to a cave in the forest, where she lived as a hermit. Wolfgarda's holy life was discovered by a hermit named Cyprian, who brought her food and water. Eventually, she was found by a group of hunters, who were so moved by her sanctity that they became converted to Christianity and pledged to protect her.
