Uzah

Uzah is mentioned in the Old Testament as a priest of the tribe of Merari who, along with his brother Ahiezer, helped carry the ark of the covenant on a cart during the move from Shiloh to Nob (1 Chronicles 15:13-15 and 2 Samuel 6:1-4). When the oxen stumbled, Uzah reached out and steadied the ark, preventing it from falling, thus preventing a catastrophe from befalling the people. The midrash of the Talmud (Yoma 66b) emphasizes Uzah's heroism and bravery in protecting the ark; he was struck dead immediately afterwards by God because he touched the ark while it was being moved, as God had decreed that it must never be touched except by priests and their descendants.
