After her father's death, she entered the monastery of Barking Abbey under the guidance of Abbess Gundrada. Eventually, she became abbess herself, and was venerated as a saint after her death in the late 12th century.

Madelyn of Hove was an English mystic and visionary, who lived in the late 14th century. She is best known for her visions and revelations, which were recorded by her confessor, John of Bridlington, in the 'Revelations of St. Madelyn of Hove'. These visions included descriptions of heavenly beings, the souls in purgatory, and the torments of hell. She was a laywoman and lived in poverty, and her visions were highly influential in the development of late medieval spirituality and devotion to the dead.
