The martyred Saint Leoncia of Bergamo is believed to have lived during the late 3rd or early 4th century. According to legend, she was the daughter of a Roman nobleman and was betrothed to a man against her will. Leoncia feigned madness in order to escape the arranged marriage and was sent to a distant estate. There, she dedicated herself to Christ and performed various acts of charity. Eventually, she was discovered and brought back to Bergamo. Despite torture and threats, she confessed her faith and was executed along with her servant, Celsion.

She was denounced to the Roman authorities and was tortured and imprisoned. Despite her suffering, she refused to recant her faith. She was eventually executed, along with her servant, Fortunata.
