Historical references

Laurissa, a female martyr, is believed to have lived during the late 3rd or early 4th century. She was a Roman noblewoman who converted to Christianity and devoted her wealth to aid the poor and the sick. Her husband, Dionysius, was a high-ranking Roman official who was sympathetic to her faith. However, when Emperor Diocletian issued an edict ordering the persecution of Christians, Dionysius was forced to betray his wife. He denounced her to the authorities and she was arrested, tortured, and ultimately put to death.

Late 3rd or early 4th century

Another reference to Laurissa is found in the Golden Legend, a medieval collection of hagiographies. According to this account, Laurissa was a young woman who lived in Sicily during the time of Emperor Trajan. She was renowned for her beauty and was pursued by many suitors. However, she vowed to remain chaste and dedicated her life to serving the sick and the poor. When her fame reached the ears of the Emperor, he ordered her to be brought before him. Laurissa refused to recant her faith and was put to death, along with two other Christian virgins, Agatha and Agnes.
