Jose de Anchieta, a Portuguese Jesuit priest and explorer, was born around 1534 in Lisbon, Portugal. He arrived in Brazil in 1553 and became the first European to establish a permanent settlement in the region, at São Vicente. Anchieta is considered the father of Brazilian letters, having written extensively about the geography, culture, and people of the region. He died in 1597.

José de San Martín, a military commander and politician, was born in 1778 in Yungay, Peru. He played a major role in the South American Wars of Independence, leading the Argentine army to victory over the Spanish forces in the Battle of San Lorenzo in 1810. He later led the Peruvian campaign to independence and retired from military life in 1826. San Martín died in 1850.
