According to Greek mythology, Ilian was the son of King Priam of Troy and Hecuba. He was renowned for his great beauty and was the object of jealousy for Paris, who abducted Helen, the wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta. The Trojan War ensued, which lasted for ten years and ended with the fall of Troy. Ilian, known as Hector in the Iliad, was the greatest Trojan warrior and was the adversary of Achilles. He was eventually killed by Achilles during the war, and his funeral was a major focus of the Iliad.

He was later beheaded for his refusal to renounce Christ. Ilian is the patron saint of soldiers, the military, and captives.
