Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel. She was a priestess in the tabernacle at Shiloh and was barren. One day, after Elkanah her husband had finished eating and drinking, she went to the tabernacle to pray and wept before the Lord. Eli the priest saw her and thought she was drunk, but Hannah explained her tears were from sorrow and not drink. Hannah made a vow to dedicate her newborn son to the Lord's service if he granted her request for a child. After her prayer, God remembered her and she conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Samuel. When Samuel was weaned, Hannah fulfilled her vow and brought him to live in the tabernacle under Eli's care.

She became known for her piety and good works, and pilgrims came from far and wide to seek her counsel and blessings. When Sir Matthew returned, he was so impressed by his wife's transformation that he vowed to live a more devout life.
