Despite her beauty, she remained a devoted virgin and refused the advances of a local ruler. In retaliation, the ruler ordered her to be buried alive in a cave. However, a dove appeared to her in the cave and kept her comforted and sustained until she was rescued by a group of passing monks. Elpida became a revered figure and her legend spread throughout the Christian world. Her feast day is celebrated on May 4.
