In Greek mythology, Argus was a giant with one hundred eyes. He was entrusted to guard the cow Hesperides, which produced the golden apples of the Hesperides. Although Argus was diligent in his duty, he was eventually lulled to sleep by the songs of the Horae, and the hero Perseus was able to complete his task of stealing the apples.
